ESCALES
for two percussions
ESCALES is a term used in French for intermediate stops in a ship-travel. Like a spot-visit in quite different towns, some characteristic material is used in each short movement.
The five pieces were premiered together with a suite for horn and strings, under the same title, at the same concert.
In fact I use material of the horn piece in the percussion version. It is very interesting to observe, how exactly the same notes give the music a different orientation and sense in a specific surrounding. An important contrast is realized by the opposition of instruments with a smooth attack and a long resonance and dry percussion sounds.
